ORPHANED is an awareness campaign that aims to bring visibility and a voice to the 143 MILLION orphaned and marginalized children that are a growing demographic worldwide.Using a mix of stills photography and film, the project tells the story of their living conditions, the causes of their abandonment, and identifies the common threads between the children within each region.ORPHANED Project founder, photojournalist Don Mirra began his photographic journey in Spring 2007 photographing children in Russia, Romania, Ukraine,Moldova, Kenya, Uganda, Haiti, and is aiming for project completion by December 2009. Across the two year timeframe of the project, Mirra will travel to hundreds of locations finding and telling the stories of children and teenagers who live a life that, in its horror, still has hope and is preventable.ORPHANED project outputs will include a global photographic exhibition, two books and a documentary, along with viral videos and other social marketing initiatives. The aim of these products is to increase awareness of this growing global crisis, imparting the need for capable people to get involved – rather than exist as bystanders to the tragedy.
